Skua-Kittiwake encounter

from $150.00

The Story

As we drifted in the zodiac through the breathtaking landscapes of Svalbard, a realization began to dawn upon me. The icy expanse shimmered under the Arctic sun, and the silence was punctuated only by the gentle lapping of waves against our vessel. Yet, my mind was preoccupied—not solely with the wonder of the moment, but with the implications of how I would later translate these scenes through the lens of my camera.

Suddenly, an exhilarating spectacle unfolded before my eyes: an Arctic Skua engaged in an aerial skirmish with a Kittiwake. The Skua, fierce and agile, swooped and darted, while the Kittiwake, expert in evasion, flitted gracefully to avoid capture. I could feel the rush of adrenaline as I captured the turmoil, each click of the shutter preserving a split second of nature’s raw beauty.

In that moment, I envisioned the myriad ways I would edit (develop) these shots—contrasting the stark whites of the icy landscape and sky with the deep browns of the Skua. As I framed each image, I hoped to convey not only the drama of the encounter but the sheer magnificence of this Arctic realm. I had become a conduit between nature and artistry, and I hope you can appreciate this journey through my lens…
